Adamantinomas are rare, slow-growing tumors that primarily affect the jaw bone. They belong to a group of tumors known as odontogenic tumors, which originate from the tissues responsible for tooth development. Adamantinomas specifically arise from the enamel-forming cells called ameloblasts.
These tumors are typically found in the mandible (lower jaw) and less commonly in the maxilla (upper jaw). They are characterized by their solid, invasive nature and can cause considerable destruction of the surrounding bone and tissues. Adamantinomas commonly occur in individuals between the ages of 20 and 40, with a slightly higher predilection for males.

They are referred to as "adamantinomatous" due to their resemblance to enamel, which is composed primarily of a mineral called hydroxyapatite.
Treatment typically involves surgical removal of the tumor, taking care to ensure complete excision and reconstruction of any affected bone. Radiation therapy may be recommended in certain cases to help control the tumor's growth and prevent recurrence.
