This darkness is due to the absorption and scattering of light by the water and particles suspended in it. As a result, the primary source of energy in this zone comes from organic matter that sinks from the upper layers of the water column. Bacteria and other decomposers play a crucial role in breaking down this organic matter and recycling nutrients, sustaining the food web in the aphotic region.

These include deep-sea fishes, scavengers, filter-feeders, and bioluminescent creatures that produce light through biochemical reactions.
