Ascariasis infection is a medical condition caused by infestation of the human body with the parasitic roundworm known as Ascaris lumbricoides. This infection occurs predominantly in regions with poor sanitation and hygiene practices. The ingestion of Ascaris eggs through contaminated food, water, or soil is the most common mode of transmission.
Once inside the body, the Ascaris eggs hatch in the small intestine, releasing larvae that penetrate the intestinal wall and migrate through the bloodstream to the lungs. After maturing in the lungs, the larvae ascend the respiratory tract, are swallowed, and return to the intestines where they develop into adults. Adult worms can reach lengths of up to 35 centimeters and reside in the small intestine, where they reproduce by laying large numbers of eggs that are subsequently excreted in the feces.

The diagnosis of ascariasis infection is typically made through the identification of Ascaris eggs or adult worms in stool samples. Treatment involves the administration of anthelmintic medications to kill or expel the parasites from the body.
