The device consists of a glass tube, generally closed at one end and open at the other, which is partially filled with a known quantity of a reagent or a solution. This reagent often contains an alkaline solution, such as sodium hydroxide, along with a catalyst or indicator that reacts with nitrogen compounds. The sample to be tested is then introduced into the tube, either by injecting a gaseous substance or mixing a solution.
When the test substance comes into contact with the reagent, the reaction produces a distinct color change or formation of a precipitate. This change is directly related to the concentration of nitrogen compounds present in the sample.
