Bone marrow is a soft, spongy tissue found inside certain bones, including the hipbones, breastbone, and ribs. It is responsible for producing red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets that play vital roles in the body's immune system, oxygen transportation, and blood clotting.
Bone marrow transplantation is commonly employed as a treatment for various conditions such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia, and certain genetic disorders. The procedure involves extracting stem cells from either the patient's own bone marrow (autologous transplant) or a matching donor (allogeneic transplant).
