The UV rays penetrate the skin and damage the DNA in the skin cells, activating the body's defense mechanisms. In response, blood vessels in the affected area dilate, causing redness and warmth. Inflammatory cells are recruited to the site, leading to swelling and tenderness.
Symptoms of erythema solare typically manifest several hours after sun exposure and worsen over the next 24-48 hours. Common signs include redness, pain, itching, and in severe cases, blistering, peeling, and even systemic symptoms like headache and fever.
Prevention of erythema solare primarily involves taking precautionary measures to minimize UV exposure, such as wearing protective clothing, applying sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF), and seeking shade during peak sun hours. Treatment typically involves supportive care, including pain relief through over-the-counter analgesics, application of cold compresses, and the use of moisturizers to soothe the affected area.
