The term "glacial" refers to the freezing point of acetic acid, which is at or below 16.7 degrees Celsius (62 degrees Fahrenheit). Thus, glacial acetic acid is the purest form of acetic acid, typically containing at least 99% acetic acid.
Glacial acetic acid is primarily produced through a chemical reaction between methanol and carbon monoxide under high pressure and temperature, known as the Monsanto process. It is widely used in various industrial applications such as synthesis of chemicals, textile production, and manufacture of photographic film, dyes, and pigments. Additionally, it serves as a common solvent for many organic compounds.
Due to its highly corrosive nature, glacial acetic acid can cause severe burns and may be harmful if inhaled or ingested.
