Etymology of LEPTOTENE
The word "leptotene" is derived from the Greek words "lepto" meaning "thin" or "fine" and "tene" meaning "thread". It was coined by German biologist Oscar Hertwig in 1875 to describe the first stage of meiotic prophase I. In this stage, the chromosomes become visible as thin, thread-like structures under a microscope.
