Metasyphilis is a term used in medical science to describe a condition or phenomenon that occurs as a consequence of untreated or inadequately treated syphilis. It refers to the secondary or tertiary stage of syphilis, in which the infection has progressed beyond the primary stage.
Syphilis itself is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. If left untreated, syphilis can progress through various stages, including the primary stage characterized by the appearance of a painless sore or chancre, and the secondary stage marked by a rash, fever, and flu-like symptoms. However, if syphilis still remains untreated, it can further progress to the tertiary stage, which is where metasyphilis comes into play.
Metasyphilis manifests as a wide range of symptoms and complications that can affect almost any organ system in the body. This includes but is not limited to cardiovascular issues, neurosyphilis (infection of the central nervous system), gummatous syphilis (formation of soft, non-cancerous growths), and potentially life-threatening complications such as aortic aneurysm.
