The modiolus is made up of dense bone and contains numerous small canals known as modiolar canals or channels. These canals house blood vessels and nerves that provide vital sensory information to the cochlea.
Functionally, the modiolus plays a crucial role in the transmission of sound vibrations to the spiral ganglion cells in the cochlea. It helps to support the spiral structure of the cochlea and contains the spiral lamina, which forms part of the osseous spiral lamina. The spiral ganglion cells are responsible for transmitting auditory information from the hair cells of the cochlea to the brain through the auditory nerve.
