Optography refers to a now-discredited scientific theory and purported method of reproducing visual images that are believed to be etched onto the retina of an eye after death. The term is derived from the Greek words "opto" meaning "sight" or "vision" and "graphia" meaning "writing" or "inscription".
According to early adherents of optography, the final image a person sees before death is imprinted onto their retina, and this image can be extracted and studied after the individual's demise. The process of optography involved removing the eyeball, which would then be treated with various chemicals and exposed to different types of radiation. Through these techniques, researchers aimed to reveal the latent image believed to be imprinted onto the retina.
This concept gained popularity in the mid-19th century when the field of photography was in its infancy, and scientists were exploring novel ways to capture visual information. However, advances in modern science debunked the theory of optography.
