These plates covered their head, trunk, and tail, providing excellent protection against predators.

These ancient fish were primarily bottom-dwellers and inhabited both freshwater and marine environments. Osteostracans were likely filter feeders, using their specialized mouthparts to extract tiny organisms and detritus from the water.
