Rhesus Macaque is a noun that refers to a species of Old World monkey, scientifically known as Macaca mulatta. It is a medium-sized primate native to South Asia, specifically found in regions like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. Rhesus macaques have a distinct appearance with a robust build, a pinkish face, and a short tail. Adults typically measure around 53 to 64 centimeters in length, excluding the tail, which adds an extra 19 to 25 centimeters.
These monkeys are highly adaptable and can thrive in various habitats, including rainforests, arid areas, and even urban environments. Rhesus macaques are omnivorous and primarily feed on fruits, seeds, leaves, roots, insects, and occasionally small vertebrates. They live in large social groups called troops, comprising several males, females, and their offspring. Within the groups, there is a dominant hierarchy maintained through complex social interactions.
Rhesus macaques have been extensively studied due to their similarity to humans, making them valuable models for medical and psychological research. Their genetic and physiological similarity has contributed to advancements in various fields, including neuroscience, immunology, and reproductive physiology.
Just like many other primate species, rhesus macaques face threats to their survival, such as habitat destruction, hunting, capture for the pet trade, and experimentation. Nevertheless, due to their adaptability, they are currently listed as least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
