Rhytina is a noun that refers to a genus of marine mammals that are now extinct. Specifically, it refers to the herbivorous mammals that were part of the family Dugongidae. The word "Rhytina" derives from the Latin word "rhȳtīna" and the Greek word "rhútis," meaning "seaweed" or "wrack." Members of the Rhytina genus were commonly known as Steller's sea cows.
These marine mammals were large in size, measuring up to 9-10 meters in length and weighing about 8-10 tons. They had a stout body with a thick layer of fat that served as insulation in cold waters. Their skin was tough and wrinkled, while their color ranged from dark gray to brown. Rhytina had a wide and flat tail which allowed them to easily maneuver in the water.
Rhytina were once found in the North Pacific Ocean, particularly around the Bering Sea and the Commander Islands. However, human activities, including hunting for their meat, skin, and oil, led to their rapid decline and eventual extinction in the 18th century. The last known Rhytina individual was documented in 1768.

Etymology of RHYTINA
The word Rhytina is derived from the scientific name of the Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas). The species was named after the German naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller, who first described it during an expedition to the Bering Sea in 1741. Steller named the species Rytina in honor of Ferdinand Rudolph Riedel, a physician and naturalist who played a significant role in organizing the expedition. Over time, the spelling evolved to Rhytina.
